Welcome,,,!!😊💗

Khadi..!!

Khadi is distinctive product of gandhijii’s imagination. Khadi is the sun of the village sola system. Basically khadi is Indian made cloth started by Mahatma Gandhi. Cotton produced in India is usaually of short staple. Khadi provide employment to people. It is the the symbol of dignity of labour in society. Khadi is considered a part of the life of Indians . It can be made by using Charkha, handloom and many other different machines.

Basically, It is a process of making cloth from cotton to fabric which is made with help of Talki, Charkha, Handlooms etc. Khadi should be simple. Wardha, is specially popular for Khadi production. There are many factory’s where people work in the Khadi. I visited Magan sangralaya , Gram seva mandal and some other Khadi bhandar in Wardha.

Wardha is very popular for Khadi cloth. Khadi is mainly woven in cotton, but it can also be woven silk and wool. It is cool comfortable and truly envirnment friendly fabric suitable for all seasons. Khadi over the decades has moved from a freedom fighter’s identity fabric to a fashion garnments.

Why Khadi..?

Basically, Khadi is the history of India known to be a major factor in starting a movement. It stay cool in summer and warm i winters. It is the only fabric where the play of texture is so unique that no two fabrics will be absolutely identical, thus lending its exclusivity and inability in terms of feel and texture.

Some designers have tried their hands on khadi clothing line but it hasn’t yet become a Fashion statement. It is available in stores like Khadi bhandar, Fabindia and many projects have be taken by various organisations. From begining I wanted to work with rural people or want to learn the process of cotton to fabric. Dr. Yogesh kulkarni (Director of Vigyan Ashram) suggest me KHADI FABRIC  for my final project. He gave contacts of some organisation which work on process of Farm to fabric. I visited all those organisation work on this. I also visit Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Rural Industrilization (MGIRI) started by Mahatma Gandhi for employment for rural people.

In Wardha, I also visited Gram Seva Mandal in Wardha. In this organisation , I got so interesting people. They also produce Cotton to fabric of Khadi with using charkha , Handlooms etc.
But most interesting and lovable thing is they manufacture there own Charkha, Spinning machine Handloom etc. They develop there machines as per requirenment. They work on development of there machines and give training to there staff.

Finally, I decided to make my final project with this Process which is very long but Interesting....

Process of Khadi

1. Raw cotton – from Farm

First step to make Khadi cloth is to collect cotton from farm. In Wardha, I visited some Farm and there farmer. They help me to understand about cotton. There are 4 main types of fabric . But in India most of the farmers use now organic cotton seeds.  Organic cotton is generally known as cotton from plants is grown without the use of any synthetic agricultural chemical .

2. Ginning or Cleaninng

Ginning is the process whrere cotton can go to clean. These operation facilitates processing and improve fiber quality. The cotton ginning is proceeds to make a clean cotton. Ginning is the process to make good khadi cloth. In this process they use machines and also handwork.

3. Carding or Slivers

In this process, they use machines for carding of cotton. In this process the machine give slicer lab to cotton and then combine the cotton to each other. A sliver is long bundle of fiber which is generally used to spin yarn. It is long strips where the fiber is parallel.

4.Spinning

Spinning is the process where twisting together from fiber to form yarn. In those organisation, they use Charkha . Gandhi create the concept of charkha but now they develop there charkha machine with electronics or low the human energy in this. In Gram seva Mandal, I saw different charkha’s.

5. Warping

Warping process is done for making a weavers beam. Weaver beam is produced from set of yarn of some yarn count or different. Warping is  important for accelerating the next sizing process. Now a days, textile industries has developed Warping machines .

6. Weaving

Basically, weaving is the process in which two or many different set of yarn or threads are interact with each other to create or form a cloth or fabric. Weaving involves Knitting, crocheting , felting etc. To make a Khadi cloth they use Hondlooms. Handloom is wholly operated by use of hand or foot. In Gram seva mandal I saw different size of handlooms.

7. Dyeing

They use natural dyes from flowers, vegetables, fruit, herbs etc. Also I saw the Natural dye making machine on solar. They research on the natural dye and create various types of colours. I got interest in the solar machine for dyeing. Actually, I want to make my cloth with different natural colours . So, i will colour them before weaving on Handloom.

8. Printing

I love block printing on fabric. I had done block printing before. Dr. Kulkarni gave me gift some wood blocks and I had work on it. They use 5 types of printing techniques;
Leaf blocks - Fresh leaf of tree
Kacim line - Lines are drown on loosing stretched fabric with help of straw brush
Block prints – Wood blocks
Eco prints – Dry flower, leafs, vegetables etc.
Eco spray – Colour spray
